Microwave Expeditions
September ’06—Henry/KT1J meets up with Larry/K1LPS on the top of Mount Washington. The dish is the microwave rig.
9/06—A small 2M yagi, used for liaison while the microwave operators are trying to aim toward each other.
Whiteface was shrouded in fog early in the morning of September 17. Soon the poor ops, and the gear, was to be enshrouded in dripping water.
9/17—Henry at the station, set up on the rocks to the south of the visitor center.
On an earlier trip, Bob/WE1P, operated 2M liaison from the meteorology shelter. Comfortable and convenient, but also a very noisy location because of transmitting equipment in the building.
The 2005 Whiteface expedition was dramatically colder. Here, Paul/K1PJM, aims the 10 GHz dish. He and Henry dodged falling ice from the building.
August ’06—The 2006 expedition to Mansfield used two liaison ops. Phillip/AK1H, was high on the mountain and linked to Bob/WE1P, set up with larger gear in the parking lot below.
8/06—The strategy worked, saving carrying heavy gear and batteries to the peak. Henry, KT1J, makes a 10 GHz contact from an elegant compact rig.

There are several microwave contests during the summer,
plus the VHF and UHF contests. Contesters operate the
portable stations from mountain tops,
typically on 10 GHz and 24 GHz.
